Year 2 at St Andrew’s is a unique fusion between a focus on key literacy and numeracy skills and an exciting creative approach to developing children’s knowledge and thirst for learning.
Whilst helping each child to become proficient in literacy and numeracy, through discrete English and Mathematics lessons, the introduction of a creative curriculum provides opportunities to put these skills into practice in an imaginative and engaging way. The creative curriculum brings together elements from geography, history, science, art and design, design and technology and also religious studies. The Key Stage One topics are developed from the interests of the children and include topics such as ‘Turrets and Tiaras’, ‘The United Kingdom’ and ‘Monkey Puzzle’ which bring the curriculum alive and give children a context to apply their skills and knowledge.
Lessons in Year 2 are designed to be as varied in style as possible, providing children of all abilities the opportunity to engage with their learning and achieve. There is a highly practical element to most lessons where children are encouraged to develop independent working skills and start to problem solve for themselves. Good communication skills are encouraged at all times with plenty of opportunities for children to discuss and share their learning.
Children are taught by their form teacher within the Key Stage One classrooms for the majority of the day but receive specialist teaching for music, singing, recorders, Spanish and PE / games. In addition the children receive weekly swimming lessons during the school day with optional extra-curricular activities being available throughout the week.
