Year 1
Welcome to Year One. At St Andrew’s we understand that the transition from the Foundation Stage to Year One is an important stepping stone in your child’s learning. We ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from one stage to the other by building on and extending the experiences they have had and gradually easing them into more formal learning so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.
To maintain this enthusiasm we offer a wide and varied curriculum. Music, PE and Spanish are taught by specialist teachers.
Literacy and Numeracy are taught every day to enable each child to harness the skills and abilities they need. The introduction of a creative curriculum provides opportunities to put these skills into practice in an imaginative and engaging way. The creative curriculum brings together elements from geography, history, science, art and design, design and technology and also religious studies. The themes are developed around the children’s interests and current events. Previous topics such as “Turrets and Tiaras”, “Pirate Adventure” and “Monkey Puzzle”” bring the curriculum alive and give children a context to apply their skills and knowledge.
As well as the core curriculum subjects and topics that will be taught in the classroom, each pupil will have the opportunity to experience learning outside of the main school environment. In Year One we explore the local area taking full advantage of our location in the town. We also explore further afield linking our visits with the creative curriculum topics.
During the year there are opportunities for each pupil to have the chance to perform in front of an audience of invited parents for our Harvest and Spring Assemblies, our Christmas Play and our Sports Day.
